Gold Jewelry: Karats, Plating & Construction

When comparing gold jewelry, read three separate details: the gold purity, whether gold is a surface layer, and whether the piece has solid or hollow construction. A karat number by itself does not answer all three.

What do 14K and 18K mean?

Karat describes the gold share of an alloy on a 24-part scale. The nominal proportions are 14/24, or about 58.3%, for 14K and 18/24, or 75%, for 18K. Neither means pure 24K gold. In a plated or gold-filled description, the karat number can describe the gold layer rather than the entire piece.

Gold descriptions and the follow-up detail to check
DescriptionMeaningCheck before buying
Karat goldA gold alloy identified by its karat purity. The selected karat, color and construction.
Gold-filledA gold layer mechanically bonded to a base metal. The complete quality marking and base metal.
Gold-platedA gold coating on an underlying material. The base, any stated coating specification and care instructions.
VermeilA type of gold-plated jewelry with a sterling-silver base. The stated gold and coating details for that item.

For US descriptions, the FTC Jewelry Guides allow “gold-filled” for qualifying mechanically applied gold layers representing at least 1/20 of the item's total metal weight. The vermeil guidance specifies a sterling-silver base, gold of at least 10K and a minimum coating equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold. Ask for the actual specification when the coating is central to your comparison.

Does “solid gold” mean pure gold?

No. Purity still needs a karat description. The FTC also explains “solid gold” as a construction term meaning the item is not hollow. Ask separately about metal content and solid or hollow construction if a listing leaves either unclear. Do not use the color or the word “gold” alone to decide.

How should you compare two pieces?

Start with the same type of item and your intended use. For a chain, compare length, width, clasp and any stated weight as well as the metal. For earrings, compare dimensions and the fastening. For a ring, include band width and fit. Avoid treating a higher karat number or a larger-looking photograph as a complete quality comparison.

  • Record the full material description for the exact option you selected.
  • Ask about alloy ingredients if you need to avoid a particular metal; gold color alone does not establish them.
  • Check the maker's maintenance guidance. Gold plating can wear with use; there is no single lifespan that applies to every coating and wearer.
