Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver; “925” expresses that proportion. Rhodium-plated sterling silver has a rhodium surface over the silver alloy. The underlying material and the surface finish are separate details, and both matter when choosing care.
925, silver-plated and silver-tone are different descriptions
Silver plating is a layer over another material. “Silver-tone” describes appearance and does not, by itself, establish sterling-silver content. Read the complete material line for the selected item rather than judging by its white-metal color.
Why does sterling silver darken?
Sterling silver can tarnish during normal exposure. That change alone does not establish that a piece is imitation silver. Some designs also have intentionally darkened details. Before trying to brighten the whole piece, check whether that contrast is part of the design.
Rhodium plating can help protect silver from tarnish and gives it a bright finish. It does not make the surface permanent. If a plated piece needs refinishing, ask a jeweler to assess it rather than polishing harder.
Choose care for the entire piece
| Detail | What to check |
|---|---|
| Plain polished silver | Whether the maker recommends a silver polishing cloth for that finish. |
| Rhodium, gold or another coating | Instructions for the coating, including whether polishing products are suitable. |
| Darkened or textured details | Which areas should retain their original appearance. |
| Stones, pearls or decorative components | Any restrictions that apply to those materials or their attachment. |
For routine handling, start with a clean, soft cloth and the maker's instructions. Keep jewelry away from household cleaners and remove it before swimming in a chlorinated pool. Store silver separately from pieces that could scratch it; an appropriate anti-tarnish pouch can help with storage.
Can all silver jewelry go in an ultrasonic cleaner?
No. The word “silver” does not establish that a mounted stone, treatment or attachment is suitable for ultrasonic cleaning. Identify every material and follow the product's guidance before using a dip, machine or abrasive polish.
Is sterling silver always nickel-free?
The sterling designation establishes silver content, not a full list of alloy ingredients. If you need a particular metal exclusion, ask about the exact item rather than relying on a general label.
